In 1975, Nyad swam around Manhattan, an impressive 28 mi or 45 km. Not content with what was already an impressive accomplishment, in 1979 Nyad swam from North Bimini, The Bahamas, to Juno Beach, Florida, a staggering 102 mi or 164 km. Last but certainly not least, in 2013, on her fifth attempt and at age 64, Nyad swam from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage, swimming from Havana to Key West (110 mi or 180 km) and becoming, in the process, the first confirmed person to ever do so.
