Is Focusing on What You Can Control the Key to Happiness?

How many of us are truly happy? How many of us know what true happiness really is? The answer to those questions is likely beyond the scope of this article, but one thing remains for certain: Focusing on what you can control, rather than what you can’t, can likely contribute to your overall happiness.

Maybe you wanted to go to the park but it started raining outside? That certainly isn’t something you can control, and it can understandably put a damper on your day. Taking the example a little further, life happens, and it can be anything from a lost wallet to a lost loved one that happens without you having any control over the situation.

So what can you control? You can control your reactions. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” may sound like an old cliche, but in this case it certainly applies. You have the power to control your reactions, just as your reactions have the power to control your mood.

This is easier said than done, of course, and requires much hard work and dedication. Mindfulness meditation may be a useful tool to help you along on the journey, as may be the practice of stoicism, but the longest of journeys begins with a single step and like with everything else, acceptance of what you can’t change happens one step at a time.

Easy Ways to Inspire Yourself

We can all get a little low on motivation every once in a while. The daily grind can be exactly that: A grind, and over time it can certainly wear on us. Sometimes a bit of inspiration is in order to tackle that next big challenge, or even just to make it through the week. Here are three ways you can inspire yourself for whatever challenge you’re ready to take on.

Go for a walk. Sometimes the best possible way to clear your head and get yourself ready for some new ideas is to go for a walk. If at all possible taking to nature for that walk would be ideal, but if you can’t make it out of the city the open space will still be of immense benefit, and getting your body moving will help get blood flowing to the brain as well.

Find someone to talk to. For those who work mostly by themselves or who may live alone, the isolation can often be draining. Finding someone to talk to, be it to brainstorm and bounce ideas or just to catch up, is a practice than can leave us feeling refreshed and motivated.

Mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment, and although it may take some getting used to, even short meditation sessions can leave you with a clearer mind and more capable of focusing on the tasks at hand.
